Riches of Simplicity
Pamela Russell Beam
I’ve outgrown my treasures of yesterday.
Diamonds and rubies. Selfish glory.
My cedar chest within my heart,
overflows with riches.
The proud smile of my eldest son,
“Mom, I made this for you.”
Next in line, with freckles he hates,
said he wouldn’t trade me for a coloring book.
Once the baby, but bumped from his spot,
brings me flowers from your yard.
And, oh the smile on my baby’s face,
barefoot,
as he walks through the morning dew.
My treasures of old,
I chased in the dark.
Now in the light, God gives me beauty,
that I can cherish and hold.
My four sons.
